Chronic Pain Abilities Determination (CPAD)

A Chronic Pain Abilities Determination (CPAD) assessment is a combined model of physical and cognitive assessments to determine the working capabilities of an individual.

These assessments are commonly used in cases where there are both physical and cognitive restrictions. With the patient impacted after a period of time e.g. fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. CPAD assessments are commonly used in claim assessment and return to work planning.

This assessment is a combination of:

  • FCE (physical component)
  • Cognitive Testing (cognitive component)

If required we can do each assessment separately.

FCE (physical component)

The first section (FCE) compares the individual's health status, physical capabilities, biomechanics and structures to the demands of the job and the work environment.

Cognitive Testing

The second section, cognitive testing, determines whether the patient meets the cognitive demands to undertake either their own role or alternative employment.

Reports provide independent and objective information with comment regarding validity of test results.

Suitability

  • Long term/chronic problems, fatigue based problems and legal cases
  • All musculoskeletal, rheumatological or fatigue conditions (including multiple areas/global problems e.g. Fibromyalgia, M.E.)
  • Long term/chronic sickness/fatigue
  • Legal cases/claims assessment/medico legal
  • Ability to return to work
  • Work pacing
  • Permanent change of role

NOT for

  • Short term change of role
  • Condition management (this report is status only)
  • Acute problems (less than 12 weeks old)
  • Post surgery

Referral Guidance

  • The patient must have a diagnosed medical problem including an element of fatigue which is affecting their ability to work
  • Long term/chronic patients only
  • Any legal proceedings ongoing/pending/completed must be declared
  • Please state any questions that you would like answered e.g. can the patient work for 3 hours 3 days per week consecutively.
  • A job role and description of the ‘real world’ requirements/needs of the service is beneficial
  • Include any other relevant medical information that is known
